INSTRUCTIONS

* Place girls into dyads or small groups of up to a maximum of five participants.

* Give one image to each group. Have participants silently reflect on the image. It is important that they keep their questions and comments to themselves at this time. There should be no talking.

* Have girls write some kind of narration in their journals that relates to the image. Encourage creativity: They may write in the form of a story or a poem. Participants may focus on the context of the image: for example, imagining what is happening in the image; what has happened in the past; and what will happen in the future. If there are people in the image, describe who they are and perhaps their relationship with one another. Participants may also choose to look at the image symbolically and write about what the image represents to them.

* Dedicate twenty to thirty minutes for their writing. Again, remind participants to be silent throughout the process.

* Once participants have finished, have groups share their stories with one another. For smaller groups, have participants share their stories with the entire group while the facilitator displays the image that they have written about. Follow up with discussion questions.
